Question:
I just got a nice Cover Addressed to a Cadet Co. B. Alabama Corps of Cadets
care of Col. Garland, Mobile ...Any info on this Cadet corp.? Did they do
anything? Any info you could provide would be great thanks
Answer:
-"The Young Lions: Confederate Cadets at War" concerns the role of the
cadets at four Southern military schools during the War. Alabama is one
of the four. It was written by James lee Conrad and published in 1997 by
Stackpole Books.
-For information about the specific Cadet addressee and the Corps itself,
I'd recommend that the original writer contact the curator of the
Alabama Collection at the University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa). My
great-grandfather Taylor Eli Keen was a very young member of the Corps.
Their most notable battle action was a failed attempt to stop Croxton's
U.S. Cavalry from invading Tuscaloosa and burning the University in the
Spring of '65. Either at the time or later, I believe, Garland was
President (Commandant?) of the University.
